Steelers Re-Sign Asante Samuel Jr.

“Players can start officially signing with new teams on Wednesday, March 11,” noted NFL insider Greg Auman, as the Pittsburgh Steelers announced the re-signing of cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to a one-year contract worth $4 million.

Samuel, who joined the Steelers mid-season in 2025 after recovering from spinal fusion surgery, made his first appearance for the team on November 30, 2025. During his time on the field, he played in the final six regular season games and the Wild Card playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

In his limited time, Samuel recorded 10 tackles, one pass defended, and one interception. His performance has led general manager Omar Khan to express interest in retaining both Samuel and fellow cornerback James Pierre.

As the Steelers prepare for the upcoming free agency period, they are also looking to secure veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2026-27 season. The team is hopeful that Rodgers will return to lead the franchise.

Additionally, the Steelers are eyeing Bryan Cook, a safety known for his consistent defensive skills. Auman described Cook, stating, “He has three interceptions in four seasons in Kansas City, one sack and zero forced fumbles, but he’s solid and consistent enough as a defender to be Pro Football Focus’ No. 5 safety in 2025.”

Cook’s projected contract with the Texans could include $20 million guaranteed, making him a valuable target for the Steelers as they navigate the free agency landscape.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the Steelers’ overall plans for free agency and the outcome of their pursuit of Rodgers. As the clock ticks down to the start of free agency, the Steelers’ strategy will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
