Damon Stoudamire Fired as Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball Coach

Damon Stoudamire has been fired as the men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech after three seasons, the university announced on March 8, 2026. His tenure concluded with a disappointing record of 42-55, including a last-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this season with a 2-16 record.

Stoudamire’s contract was set to run through the 2027-28 season, but following a particularly challenging year that saw the team end the season on a 12-game losing streak, the decision was made to part ways. Georgia Tech will owe Stoudamire approximately $2.6 million over the next two years as part of the termination agreement.

Stoudamire’s time at Georgia Tech began with promise, as his first season saw the team finish with a record of 14-18. However, the subsequent seasons did not yield the expected improvements, and the program has struggled significantly, making only one NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010.

Prior to his role at Georgia Tech, Stoudamire served as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics and was known for his successful playing career, having been the No. 7 overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft and winning NBA Rookie of the Year in 1996.

In the wake of Stoudamire’s departure, Greg Gary has been named the interim head coach. Ryan Alpert, Georgia Tech’s athletic director, expressed gratitude for Stoudamire’s commitment, stating, “On behalf of Georgia Tech, I want to thank Damon for his commitment to the Institute, our men’s basketball program and, most importantly, our student-athletes.”

Alpert emphasized the importance of the men’s basketball program within the athletics department and the community, noting, “Georgia Tech men’s basketball has a proud history and is an important part of our athletics department and community.” He also mentioned the university’s commitment to finding a coach who can build a championship-level program.

Stoudamire’s firing marks a significant change for Georgia Tech as they look to revitalize their basketball program. The university has faced challenges in recent years, and the decision reflects a broader need for improvement within the team.

As the search for a new head coach begins, the Georgia Tech community is hopeful for a turnaround that can restore the program to its former glory. Details remain unconfirmed regarding potential candidates for the head coaching position.
