Candice Bergen Reflects on Turning 80
“I’m just in total denial. I don’t even want to talk about it. Being 80 is just unfathomable to me,” said Candice Bergen as she approaches her milestone birthday on May 9, 2024.
Bergen, who has enjoyed a prolific career in film and television, will turn 80 this year. She has garnered five Emmy Awards and has nearly 70 credits to her name, showcasing her versatility and talent.
Born to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, Candice has long been in the public eye. Her father passed away at the age of 75, and Bergen has often reflected on the impact of her family on her life and career.
Throughout her life, Bergen has been married twice, first to French director Louis Malle, who died in 1995, and later to Marshall Rose, who succumbed to Parkinson’s disease in 2025. Her daughter, Chloe Malle, now 40, is the head of editorial content at Vogue and is raising two children who affectionately call Bergen ‘Toto.’
“I think she’s wonderful with her kids, and she’s very lucky because she chose a great husband [Graham Albert], who is a fantastic father,” Bergen remarked about her daughter, highlighting the pride she takes in her family.
In recent years, Bergen has taken on a new role as Constance Bishop in the Apple TV series ‘Shrinking.’ Her character is described as a doting mother and a sassy mother-in-law, and her performance has received praise from co-stars.
“I consider Candice to be a TV legend. I mean, she is legendary. She has been for years a massive force in television, and she is so iconic,” said Ted McGinley, underscoring Bergen’s lasting influence in the industry.
Christa Miller, another co-star, noted the chemistry on set, stating, “The writers would come on set to see us working together because it was so hysterical.” This reflects Bergen’s ability to bring humor and warmth to her roles.
Despite her achievements, Bergen maintains a rigorous fitness routine, working out with a trainer five days a week, demonstrating her commitment to health and well-being as she enters this new decade.
As Bergen prepares to celebrate her 80th birthday, she continues to inspire audiences with her talent and resilience, embodying the spirit of a true icon in the entertainment world.
