Kyler Murray Signs with the Vikings
Kyler Murray has signed a one-year contract worth $1.3 million with the Minnesota Vikings, marking a significant shift in his career after being released by the Arizona Cardinals. This contract allows the Vikings to secure Murray at the NFL minimum, leaving the Cardinals responsible for the remainder of his guaranteed salary of $35.5 million for 2026.
Murray, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has accounted for a total of 153 touchdowns throughout his career. His tenure with the Cardinals was marked by both success and challenges, including two Pro Bowl selections but only one playoff appearance. Injuries, including a torn right ACL and a foot injury, limited him to just five games in 2025.
The Vikings are looking to enhance their quarterback competition under head coach Kevin O’Connell, who has expressed a desire for rigorous competition at the position. O’Connell stated, “Unless I’m confused in any way, shape or form, I don’t believe we have to name one of those currently,” indicating that the team is exploring all options.
In contrast, the Vikings’ previous quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, was drafted as the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but struggled in his first season as a starter, finishing with a QBR of 35.6 and ranking No. 24 among 26 quarterbacks who started at least 10 games in 2025. This performance may have prompted the Vikings to seek a more experienced option in Murray.
Murray’s dual-threat ability keeps him in the lower-tier QB1 discussion for fantasy value, and he aims to play for a team where he can win quickly. He believes that the Vikings provide the necessary infrastructure—both on the field and organizationally—to achieve that goal. Murray remarked, “I think I was blessed with the cognitive skills to just go out there and just see it before it happens.”
As the Vikings prepare for the upcoming season, observers will be watching closely to see how Murray adapts to his new environment and whether he can reclaim his status as a top quarterback in the league. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific terms of his role within the team and how he will compete against other quarterbacks on the roster.
