The Major League Baseball All-Star Game 2026 is underway in Philadelphia, featuring top players from both the American League and National League. As the game progresses into the ninth inning, the American League holds a 4-0 lead over the National League. The event has seen various pre-game festivities and in-game highlights, including musical performances and notable plays.

Prior to the first pitch, which was anticipated to occur with temperatures around 90 degrees, several performances set the stage. Patti LaBelle sang the National Anthem, while Jennifer Hudson performed “America the Beautiful.” Player introductions were also a key part of the pre-game ceremonies, with players signing a large “Declaration of Independence.”

Game Highlights and Key Performances

The American League‘s lead was extended significantly by a home run from Miguel Vargas. This marked only the third All-Star homer by a White Sox player, with previous instances by Frank Thomas in 1995 and Magglio Ordoñez in 2001. Vargas‘s home run against Justin Wroblewski was noted as the first extra-base hit of the game.

The American League pitching staff has delivered a dominant performance, combining for eight scoreless innings. Across these innings, nine pitchers have contributed, accumulating 14 strikeouts, allowing two walks, and only two hits. Juan Soto and Pete Crow-Armstrong recorded the only hits for the National League.

Among the pitchers, Bryan Baker, a first-time All-Star for the Tampa Bay Rays, has been a standout. His approach, which includes ditching the slider and relying almost exclusively on a changeup, has contributed to cutting his career ERA in half and moving him into a closer’s role. His changeup has proven to be platoon-neutral, with left-handed hitters batting .143 and right-handed hitters batting .125 against the pitch. The Rays are noted for leading the league in right-on-right changeups.

Another notable pitcher, Jhoan Duran, made an entrance into the game. Duran, known for his high Stuff+ metric since 2020, features a diverse mix of dominant offerings, including a 97 mph split-finger, a triple-digit fastball, an 88 mph power curve, and an 89 mph sweeper. His introduction was met with some timing issues during the broadcast.

Mason Miller also showcased his velocity, throwing pitches at 100 mph, 102 mph, 102 mph, and 102 mph during his appearance, facing Munetaka Murakami before Duran entered the game.

Player Reactions and Team Contributions

Brandon Marsh described the All-Star Game as “an incredible day.” Kyle Schwarber expressed his hope that Philadelphia was “ready to rock and roll” for the Tuesday night game. Schwarber had previously participated in the Home Run Derby, where he experienced a close finish.

Louie Varland of the Toronto Blue Jays also pitched for the American League. Despite his effectiveness, having blossomed into an All-Star reliever with a strong changeup and high-nineties fastball, he has faced a significant number of batters since the beginning of 2025, between playoffs and heavy in-season use. He struck out James Wood looking with a breaking ball.

The game saw Otto Lopez hit a single to right off Bryan Baker in the bottom of the ninth. Aroldis Chapman, who entered to pitch for the American League, struck out Jordan Walker, the 2026 Home Run Derby champion, with a sinker. Matt Olson then popped out to short, leaving Baker to attempt the final out for the American League. Cedanne Rafaela bounced out to second for the final out of one of the innings.

Randy Arozarena greeted Duran with a single into center, and Travis Bazzana chopped into a fielder’s choice. Ivan Herrera grounded out to third, leading to a force out at second to end an inning. Hunter Goodman lined out to short, breaking his bat in the process.

The Detroit Tigers‘ third baseman, Kevin McGonigle, experienced an All-Star homecoming during the event.
