Kal Somani, a US-based entrepreneur, is leading a consortium to acquire the Rajasthan Royals for an impressive $1.63 billion. This acquisition marks a significant milestone, as it makes the Rajasthan Royals the first IPL franchise to be sold for over a billion dollars.
Somani, who has been a minority investor in the franchise since 2021, expressed his enthusiasm for the investment, stating, “We see huge potential with this investment, and we are excited for the future of the IPL.” He is also the founder and CEO of several companies, including IntraEdge, Truyo, Truyo.AI, and Academian.
The consortium backing Somani includes notable figures such as Rob Walton and Sheila Ford Hamp, further solidifying the financial strength behind this acquisition. Previously, the Rajasthan Royals were owned by British-Indian businessman Manoj Badale, who held a 65% stake in the team.
Historically, the Rajasthan Royals were acquired by Emerging Media Ventures for just $67 million in 2007, highlighting the dramatic increase in value for IPL franchises over the years. The current deal is expected to be finalized soon, pending approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In addition to his involvement with the Rajasthan Royals, Somani is a co-owner of the Motor City Golf Club and has a strong focus on data privacy, AI governance, and sports technology. His consortium also owns the Paarl Royals and Barbados Royals, indicating a broader strategy in the sports investment landscape.
As the IPL continues to grow in popularity and financial value, observers are keenly watching how this acquisition will impact the league and the Rajasthan Royals’ future performance. The announcement of the deal is anticipated within the next four or five days, but details remain unconfirmed.
