USA Prepares for Türkiye Match with Roster Adjustments
The U.S. Men’s National Team manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has implemented nine changes to the starting lineup for the final group stage match against Türkiye. This marks the most adjustments a USA team has made between two World Cup matches, surpassing the previous record of five changes between games in the 1998 tournament.
Only midfielder Weston McKennie, who will serve as captain, and striker Ricardo Pepi are retained from the previous 2-0 victory against Australia. These modifications are in response to several factors, including the team having already secured its place in the knockout round.
Strategic Rotations and Player Debuts
Pochettino has opted to rest four regular starters who have accumulated one yellow card: midfielder Tyler Adams, striker Folarin Balogun, defender Chris Richards, and fullback Antonee “Jedi” Robinson. This decision aims to prevent them from receiving a second yellow card and facing suspension for the upcoming Round of 32 match.
The changes also provide an opportunity for other players to gain experience and for some to rest. Defenders Mark McKenzie and Miles Robinson are set to make their World Cup debuts. Additionally, forward Brenden Aaronson and goalkeeper Matt Turner will see their first minutes in this tournament. Midfielder Cristian Roldan is unavailable due to a quadricep issue.
A notable decision involves Turner starting in goal over Matt Freese. While Freese has only 17 caps, it was widely anticipated that Pochettino might keep him in goal for more World Cup experience. Turner, who started all four matches for the U.S. in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, was unseated by Freese before last summer’s Gold Cup.
The status of star forward Christian Pulisic was also a key question leading into the match. Pulisic missed the 2-0 win against Australia after sustaining a calf injury in the 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Pulisic indicated he was feeling good and hoped to play a part in the match.

During the match, Mustapha Ghorbal, the Algerian referee, drew the ire of Türkiye’s coaches and reserve players following a late tackle by Berhalter. In the 13th minute, McKennie made a solo run down the right side, laying the ball back to Aaronson, whose initial shot was blocked before forcing a save from Çakır.
Türkiye equalized after a defensive mix-up between McKenzie and Robinson. Alper Yılmaz set up Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler, who scored past Matt Turner. The crowd at Los Angeles Stadium was described as boisterous, despite the lack of tension given that the USA had already advanced as group winners.
The USA is confirmed to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, regardless of the outcome of the current match or future group games. This information was confirmed by Fifa’s website. If they win that match, they will face the winner of Group G, likely Egypt or potentially Iran, or another third-place team. A potential quarterfinal matchup could be against Spain.
