2026 World Cup: How teams can advance to the knockout rounds2026 World Cup: How teams can advance to the knockout rounds

The 2026 World Cup introduces a new format where finishing third in a group does not automatically mean elimination. With 48 teams participating, the tournament now includes eight best third-place finishers from across the 12 groups. The top two teams in each group secure automatic advancement, with the remaining eight spots in the 32-team knockout bracket allocated to the highest-ranked third-place teams.

These rankings are determined by several criteria, including points, goal difference, goals scored, and other tiebreakers. This expanded format means that 12 teams will compete for these eight spots, making the race for qualification a significant subplot during the final days of the group stage.

Qualification Criteria and Tiebreakers

Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss during the group stage. If multiple teams are level on points after their three group matches, specific tiebreakers are applied to determine their final standings.

The initial tiebreakers focus on head-to-head performance between the tied teams:

  • Most points obtained in head-to-head matches.
  • Superior goal difference in head-to-head matches.
  • Most goals scored in head-to-head matches.

If teams remain tied after these criteria, further rules are used:

  • Superior goal difference across all group matches.
  • Most goals scored across all group matches.
  • Highest team conduct score in all group matches, which considers yellow and red cards.
  • FIFA World Ranking.

For the eight best third-place teams to advance to the knockout stage, the criteria used are similar:

  • Points
  • Goal difference
  • Goals scored
  • Highest team conduct score in all group matches
  • FIFA World Ranking
