Hovland claims Travelers Championship after playoff

Viktor Hovland secured the Travelers Championship title in a Monday morning playoff against Scottie Scheffler. The playoff, held on the 442-yard par 4 18th hole at TPC River Highlands, followed a sudden-death format. Hovland’s victory marks his eighth win on the PGA Tour.

The decisive moment came on the 18th hole. Hovland’s drive landed 293 yards down the middle of the fairway. Scheffler, despite previous struggles with his drives, matched Hovland’s distance. Both players then hit their iron shots close to the cup, with Hovland’s ball six feet away and Scheffler’s two feet from the hole. Hovland successfully sank his putt, while Scheffler missed his short putt, leading to Hovland’s win.

Scheffler commented on his missed putt, stating, “I hit it on my line, I think it was just a little bit firm.” He added that it was a disappointing outcome, feeling he was close but not quite good enough. Hovland expressed his excitement, noting that he knew he needed to perform at his best to defeat Scheffler.

Sunday’s weather delay and forced playoff

The playoff was necessitated after a lengthy rain delay on Sunday, which lasted nearly 90 minutes during the final round. At the time of the delay, Hovland and Scheffler were on the 14th hole and had been exchanging the lead throughout the round, with Scheffler holding a two-stroke advantage.

Both players had an opportunity to win outright on Sunday with a birdie putt on the 18th. Hovland missed his attempt, and Scheffler’s putt went long, requiring him to make a par-saving putt to force the playoff. This left both golfers tied at -21 for the week, setting up the Monday morning showdown.

Scheffler entered the Travelers Championship with one win this season, three runner-up finishes, and 13 top-25 finishes in all 13 events he had played. He leads the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoff chase and has achieved top-4 finishes in two of the season’s three major tournaments to date.

Hovland’s performance this season included a solo third-place finish at the RBC Canadian Open two weeks prior to the Travelers. He had five top-25 finishes in the 13 events he played before this week. Hovland acknowledged his struggles since his 2023 Tour Championship win, stating, “I know how good I can get and I keep pushing myself and I keep wanting to get better and then when I fall short it really pisses me off.”

Looking ahead for PGA Tour players

The Travelers Championship concludes the PGA Tour’s Signature Events for 2026. The Tour plans to rework its schedule after next season, aiming to create more events with competitive leaderboards.

Notable players at the top of the Travelers leaderboard included major winners such as Collin Morikawa at -20, Matt Fitzpatrick at -19, and U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark at -18.

The PGA Tour will next head to Illinois for the John Deere Classic. Following that, the Tour will move to the U.K. for the Genesis Scottish Open and the Open Championship, which will be held at Royal Birkdale this year. Scheffler is the defending champion at the Open Championship.
