The NBA‘s attention has shifted to free agency following the 2026 NBA Draft. The official negotiation period is set to open on Tuesday, June 30, at 6 p.m. ET, though activity has been ongoing since the draft concluded last week. Several significant developments have already occurred, including the trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, which initiated a series of other transactions.

Among the recent moves, the Detroit Pistons traded Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Charlotte Hornets sent LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Los Angeles Lakers re-signed Austin Reaves. Additionally, James Harden declined his option with the Cavs, reportedly with the intention of signing a new deal with the team. Draymond Green also declined his option, and reports indicate the Warriors may pursue LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Key Player Decisions and Trade Discussions

James Harden declined his one-year, $42.3 million option with the Cleveland Cavaliers, aiming to secure a multiyear deal to remain with the team. This move could benefit both Harden and the Cavaliers, potentially allowing Harden to earn more on a new contract while helping the team manage its salary cap by offering a lower annual salary over more seasons. Similarly, Fred VanVleet reportedly opted into his one-year, $25 million player option with the Houston Rockets for the upcoming season, following an injury that sidelined him last season.

Trade discussions are also a significant part of the current free agency landscape. The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors are reportedly engaged in talks regarding Kawhi Leonard. Leonard, who is 35 years old and in the final year of his contract, is said to be considering an extension only with Toronto, a team he previously led to an NBA championship. The Dallas Mavericks are also reportedly interested in acquiring Leonard, with a potential trade package centered around Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and draft picks. A trade to Dallas would likely depend on Leonard agreeing to a contract extension with the Mavericks.

Several players have made decisions regarding their player options. Zach LaVine of the Sacramento Kings picked up his $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season, delaying his free agency. Conversely, Sandro Mamukelashvili declined his $2.8 million player option with the Raptors to become a free agent, making him one of the available centers in the market. The Brooklyn Nets declined team options for Josh Minott and Day’Ron Sharpe, but are reportedly negotiating new deals for both players. Minott is expected to sign a two-year, $9 million deal, while Sharpe is set to sign a two-year, $20 million contract. The Nets also declined a $6.5 million team option for Ziaire Williams, making him an unrestricted free agent, with the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly showing interest.

Team Strategies and Potential Signings

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly looking to leverage cap flexibility created by Draymond Green‘s decision to decline his option. This could enable them to pursue LeBron James in free agency or acquire Anthony Davis via trade. Some reports suggest that James could consider joining the Warriors, potentially playing alongside Stephen Curry, especially given his desire to live in Los Angeles. However, the safest bet for James is still considered to be a return to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he could finish his career and continue to reside in Los Angeles.

The Miami Heat are actively seeking three-point shooters to complement Giannis Antetokounmpo. Among their targets are Tim Hardaway Jr., a Miami native who shot 41% on three-point attempts last season, and Khris Middleton, a former teammate of Antetokounmpo. Other players on Miami’s radar include Landry Shamet, Anfernee Simons, and Quentin Grimes. The Heat are also presumed to be interested in re-signing Norman Powell.

The Atlanta Hawks have fully guaranteed Buddy Hield‘s $9.66 million salary for the 2026-27 season. Hield, who shot 35% on three-point attempts last season, also has a $10 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. The Minnesota Timberwolves, following the trade of LaMelo Ball, are in need of frontcourt depth and could target Sandro Mamukelashvili, who was a significant bench player for Toronto last season. The San Antonio Spurs, with access to the non-taxpayer midlevel exception, might pursue Rui Hachimura, who started in 41 of his 68 games with the Lakers last season and shot 44.3% from three-point range.

The free agency period officially begins on Tuesday, June 30, at 6 p.m. ET.
