Golden State’s pursuit of star players

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly pursuing a trade for Anthony Davis and aiming to sign LeBron James as a free agent. This strategy, according to multiple league sources, appears to be the team’s offseason plan. A trade for Davis would necessitate including Jimmy Butler, who is currently on an expiring contract valued at $57 million and recovering from a torn ACL. The Warriors would also need to include draft capital, possessing two future first-round picks and four first-round swaps to facilitate any potential deal.

The hope within the Warriors organization is that acquiring Davis would help attract James from Los Angeles to the Bay Area once free agency officially commences. The proposed pitch to James involves reuniting with Davis, teaming up with Steph Curry and Draymond Green, playing under coach Steve Kerr, and collectively pursuing another championship title.

However, there is considerable doubt regarding the feasibility of this plan. The Washington Wizards have indicated their intention to retain Davis, especially after re-signing Trae Young to a significant extension. Wizards general manager Will Dawkins stated, “He wants to be here. We want him here.” Davis is set to become eligible for a substantial extension in August.

The Wizards’ recent actions suggest a team focused on immediate success. The appeal of a 37-year-old Butler returning from injury to Washington is uncertain, potentially requiring Butler to be routed to a third team with a different All-Star-caliber player going to Washington. Additionally, Butler recently expressed his desire to remain with Golden State, stating it is the best organization he has played for, though he acknowledged the possibility of a trade.

The Warriors may not be the sole team interested in Davis. Reports suggest the Portland Trail Blazers could also target Davis, possessing tradable salaries and future draft picks that could be attractive in a star trade. This could potentially drive up the price if Washington decides to engage in discussions for Davis.

Draymond Green’s contract decision

Draymond Green has declined his player option for the upcoming season, valued at nearly $28 million, making him a free agent. This decision provides the Warriors with increased flexibility in their pursuit of James and Davis. Despite opting out, Green is anticipated to re-sign with the Warriors for his 15th season, according to a team source. He could potentially sign a longer-term contract with a lower annual value to create more salary cap space for the potential additions of James and/or Davis.

Last season, Green averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. While his offensive consistency has been a challenge, his defensive impact remains strong. He played in 68 games last season, a period marked by various injuries across the Warriors roster. Green has consistently expressed his desire to remain with Golden State, stating, “If they want me here, I’ll be right here.”

A notable moment from Green’s past season involved a heated argument with coach Steve Kerr during a game against the Orlando Magic. Kerr publicly apologized for the incident, and their relationship reportedly strengthened afterward. Green has voiced pride in his contributions to the Warriors’ success and his commitment to maintaining the organization’s strong standing for the future.

Kawhi Leonard trade discussions

Discussions are also circulating regarding the future of Kawhi Leonard. Reports indicate that the LA Clippers and Toronto Raptors have held serious talks about a potential return to Toronto for Leonard. However, some suggest that the noise surrounding Toronto might be leverage in extension negotiations with Los Angeles.

Another team to watch in these discussions is the Dallas Mavericks. According to reports, Mavericks president Masai Ujiri is interested in reuniting with Leonard. The Mavericks and Clippers have reportedly discussed a deal that could send Leonard to Dallas in exchange for a package including P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, and draft picks. Ujiri was instrumental in the original acquisition of Leonard by the Raptors in 2018, a move that led to a championship for Toronto a year later.

Despite Leonard’s strong performance last season, where he averaged 28 points while playing 65 games, the Clippers face a decision as he enters the final year of his contract. The Mavericks’ interest is described as genuine, but questions remain about their ability to contend immediately with Leonard, especially given Ujiri’s stated focus on “future-based” moves with emerging talent like Cooper Flagg. The ultimate decision regarding Leonard’s future rests with Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.

Other players making contract decisions include Fred VanVleet of the Houston Rockets, who is exercising his $25 million player option for next season. Zach LaVine of the Sacramento Kings is also exercising his $49 million player option, despite playing only 39 games last season. Former Portland Trail Blazers center DeAndre Ayton is picking up his $8 million option with the Los Angeles Lakers.
