Interest in Leonard
Kawhi Leonard, a prominent player in the NBA, is reportedly drawing trade interest from multiple teams, including his former clubs, the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs. According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, a number of playoff teams are monitoring Leonard’s situation with the Los Angeles Clippers, despite reports suggesting the Clippers are reluctant to trade him. Marks specifically mentioned the possibility of Leonard returning to one of his former teams.
The Raptors have reportedly expressed interest in a reunion with Leonard, and he is said to be open to signing an extension if a trade to Toronto were to materialize, as reported by NBA insider Jake Fischer. Leonard, who is in the final year of his current contract, is set to earn $50.3 million before potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent. His preference, however, is to remain with the Clippers, his hometown team.
Leonard is coming off a season where he averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals in 65 appearances, achieving career-best shooting splits. He finished tied for seventh in MVP voting and earned his seventh All-NBA selection, being named to the second team.
Potential Implications for Raptors and Spurs
For both the Raptors and Spurs, acquiring a player of Leonard’s caliber is understandable, given his status as one of the league’s top players. However, questions arise regarding his long-term fit with either team’s current trajectory. For the Spurs, moving multiple assets for Leonard might not align with their strategy, particularly after a recent championship win.
The Raptors, while showing competitive relevance last season with a 46-36 record and making their first playoff appearance since 2022, are still considered to be a few years away from being a consistent contender. While Leonard could accelerate this timeline, his injury history and age raise concerns about his future impact in the league.
The Clippers, despite making six playoff appearances in the eight seasons since Leonard joined, have only one conference finals run. Following a 42-40 season, the team appears to be heading in a new direction. They traded veterans James Harden and Ivica Zubac at the February trade deadline, acquiring younger players like Bennedict Mathurin and the No. 5 pick, which was used on Keaton Wagler.
Raptors General Manager Bobby Webster has indicated the team’s interest in being opportunistic in the trade market, noting their assets including first-round picks and players on rookie-scale contracts. The Raptors were reportedly interested in LaMelo Ball before his trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and have also shown interest in Bucks center Myles Turner.
Leonard’s History with Former Teams
Leonard was famously traded from the San Antonio Spurs to the Toronto Raptors in 2018, where he played a pivotal role in securing Toronto’s first NBA championship and earning his second Finals MVP award. During that playoff run, he averaged 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.7 steals over 24 games.
After that championship season, Leonard chose to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, joining forces with Paul George. The Raptors ultimately fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a seven-game first-round series in their most recent playoff appearance.
Beyond the Raptors, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has also suggested keeping an eye on the Detroit Pistons as a potential suitor for Leonard, following their move to clear cap space by trading Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies.
