Brown’s Departure from Boston

Jaylen Brown has reportedly been traded to the Philadelphia 76ers after a decade with the Boston Celtics. The deal, which was reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, sends Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George and a package of draft picks. This move comes after Brown’s best season with the Celtics, where he developed from a defensive specialist into an All-Star player and MVP candidate.

The Celtics will receive George, two future first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and two future second-round picks in 2028 and 2030. This trade follows earlier discussions where Brown was considered as part of a trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo, a deal that ultimately did not materialize as Antetokounmpo was traded to the Miami Heat.

Brown was selected by the Celtics as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. His career began with a focus on defense, averaging 6.6 points per game as a rookie and receiving votes for Defensive Player of the Year in his second season. After a third season averaging 13 points, he significantly improved his offensive game, consistently averaging over 20 points per game since the 2019-20 NBA season.

Brown earned his first All-Star Game selection in the 2020-21 season. Since then, he has maintained strong performance, averaging 24.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. He has made a total of five All-Star Games, been named to the second-team All-NBA twice, and finished sixth in the MVP voting once. He also played a role in the Celtics’ 2023-24 NBA championship.

Impact on Both Franchises

For the 76ers, acquiring Brown means he will join forces with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. This trio aims to bolster the team’s competitiveness, especially after their deepest postseason run in decades. The franchise has not reached the Eastern Conference finals since 2001, when they made it to the NBA Finals with Allen Iverson.

George, who is 36, has faced injury challenges in recent seasons, appearing in more than 56 games only once in the last five seasons. In his two seasons with the 76ers, he did not play in more than 41 games. Last season, George averaged 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 37 contests, with a 39.2 percent three-point shooting accuracy. He also served a 25-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

The trade occurs at a notable juncture for the Celtics. With Jayson Tatum recovering from an Achilles injury at the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, the team was expected to face challenges. Brown, however, elevated his performance, reportedly averaging 28.7 points per game while Tatum was sidelined and helping the team secure a No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Despite Brown’s efforts, the Celtics were unable to maintain their momentum in the playoffs, suffering a first-round exit against the Philadelphia 76ers. This early exit may have prompted the Celtics to re-evaluate their relationship with Brown. Reports indicate this is not the first time Brown has been part of trade discussions, with the Celtics reportedly willing to include him in a deal for Kevin Durant in 2022.

That earlier deal also fell through, leading Brown to sign a five-year, $285 million extension with the Celtics. He has played two seasons under this contract, with $57 million, $61 million, and $64 million owed over the next three years. The contract, combined with previous trade attempts, may have influenced the Celtics’ decision to move on from Brown, even after the Antetokounmpo trade did not materialize.

The Celtics had also reportedly engaged in trade talks involving Brown with the Minnesota Timberwolves after the 2026 NBA Draft, though the Timberwolves ultimately traded for LaMelo Ball instead. Brown’s departure marks a significant change for the Celtics, who will now move forward with George and additional draft picks.

Looking Ahead

The trade allows the Celtics to retool their roster and potentially address their payroll, which had placed them in the second apron of the luxury tax. Earlier moves to trade Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis had already helped free the team from the restrictive second apron. While trading Brown creates future cap space and reorganizes the team around Tatum, it also means losing a player described as a two-way dynamo and a four-time All-Star.

The argument has often been that Tatum is Boston’s best player, but Brown’s contributions have been significant, making him a valuable asset. The decision to trade Brown, especially after a disappointing first-round playoff exit, has raised questions about the team’s chosen path forward. The Celtics will now aim to bounce back from their recent playoff performance with their new acquisitions.

For the 76ers, the addition of Brown provides another star to complement Embiid and Maxey as they pursue a championship. George, despite his injury history, can still be a productive player when on the court. His last season with the 76ers saw him average 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
