NBA's Handling of Clippers-Kawhi Leonard Investigation Has Been EmbarrassingNBA's Handling of Clippers-Kawhi Leonard Investigation Has Been Embarrassing

A trade sending Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors has been put on hold as the NBA continues its investigation into allegations of salary-cap circumvention by the Los Angeles Clippers. The trade, which was initially agreed upon on June 30, involved sending Leonard to Toronto.

The Raptors announced on Thursday that they would not finalize the deal until the league’s probe concludes. This decision came after the NBA informed both teams that Toronto would assume the risk of any potential penalties associated with the investigation. The Clippers, in a statement, reiterated their denial of any wrongdoing and expressed confidence that the facts would confirm their position.

Investigation into Allegations

The NBA’s investigation, which began in September, centers on a $28 million endorsement deal Leonard received from Aspiration, a company in which Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had invested $60 million. The probe was triggered by a podcast episode that detailed this contract, raising questions about whether the Clippers used Aspiration to provide impermissible benefits to Leonard, potentially circumventing salary cap rules.

The league hired the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz to conduct the investigation. While there is no specific timeline for its conclusion, reports indicate that the firm is expected to finalize its work in the coming weeks. Commissioner Adam Silver previously stated on June 3 that he had instructed the firm to conclude the investigation in a timely manner, emphasizing the need for finality for all teams involved.

The Clippers’ statement detailed their cooperation with the NBA over the past 10 months, including participating in dozens of interviews and providing numerous documents. They maintained that they did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration and asserted that they were victims of a fraud initiated by Joseph Sanberg, who has since been sentenced to prison.

Impact on Teams and Players

The delay in finalizing the trade has created uncertainty for both the Clippers and the Raptors, affecting their offseason plans. The Raptors stated their eagerness to bring Leonard back to Toronto and expressed anticipation for a swift resolution. Leonard previously led the Raptors to the 2019 NBA championship before joining the Clippers, where he has played for the past seven seasons.

The investigation explores whether the Clippers participated in arranging the side deal beyond merely introducing Aspiration executives to Leonard. Such involvement could constitute a violation of Article 13 of the NBA collective bargaining agreement. The Clippers have consistently denied these allegations, affirming their confidence in the outcome of a fair and thorough evaluation of the facts.

The situation has put players and draft picks involved in the trade in limbo. The NBA’s handling of the investigation has drawn criticism for its extended duration, with some suggesting it has severely impacted transaction windows and the ability of teams to plan for the future. Leonard is currently owed a base salary for a future season.
