The numbers
The electric vehicle (EV) market is witnessing remarkable growth, with battery-electric cars achieving an 18.8% market share in the European Union (EU) as of February 2026. In the first two months of the year, 312,369 new battery-electric cars were registered, reflecting a significant shift in consumer preferences towards greener transportation options.
Hybrid-electric vehicles are also gaining traction, capturing 38.7% of the EU market share in the same period. Registrations of plug-in hybrid electric cars reached 162,751 units, indicating a robust interest in vehicles that combine electric and traditional fuel sources. Meanwhile, traditional petrol car registrations have seen a notable decline, dropping by 23.3% year-to-date in February 2026.
The diesel car market, however, remains a smaller player, accounting for only 8.1% of new car registrations from January to February 2026. This decline in petrol and diesel registrations underscores a broader trend towards sustainable transportation solutions.
In a local initiative, the Canandaigua Police Department has added two new electric vehicles to its fleet, funded by a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). This move is part of a larger effort to promote environmentally friendly practices within municipal operations.
Matthew Nielsen, a representative from the Canandaigua Police Department, expressed his initial skepticism about the transition to electric vehicles but has since become a proponent. “I wasn’t always on board with it, but after seeing and designating specific assignments for those to test out, I’m confident the assignments we’re giving the vehicles will be fine for it,” he stated, highlighting the department’s commitment to adapting to new technologies.
Jodi Bechtel, another local official, emphasized the importance of community engagement in understanding electric vehicles. “With fluctuating gas prices and growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs), this is a perfect event to learn about EVs in a relaxed, community setting,” she noted, suggesting that public awareness and education are crucial as the market evolves.
Historically, the battery-electric car market share in the EU has increased from 15.2% just one year earlier, indicating a significant acceleration in the adoption of electric vehicles. This growth is likely influenced by a combination of technological advancements, government incentives, and a growing public consciousness regarding environmental issues.
As the electric vehicle landscape continues to evolve, observers are keenly watching how these trends will impact traditional car manufacturers and the broader automotive market. Details remain unconfirmed regarding future regulations and incentives that may further influence this shift towards electric mobility.
