Mia Bieniemy, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot on Sunday night at the couple’s home in Ashburn, Virginia. Following the incident, their son, Elijah Bieniemy, was arrested and faces multiple charges related to the shooting.
Deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. They found an adult female inside the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was then transported to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The victim was identified as Mia Bieniemy, who is 57 years old. She sustained injuries to her chest and arm but was reported to be in stable condition on Monday.
Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was subsequently charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond. A mug shot of Elijah Bieniemy was released by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Jail records indicate that Elijah Bieniemy was booked into the Loudoun County Jail at 2:41 a.m. on Monday, roughly seven hours after deputies arrived at the scene. Public court records list a public defender as his attorney. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 31.
According to court filings in Loudoun County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Mia Bieniemy was shot twice and underwent surgery. Four individuals were present inside the home when the shooting occurred, including the suspect and the victim. Investigators have characterized the shooting as domestic in nature, though no motive has been publicly disclosed. The sheriff’s office stated that the investigation is ongoing and that there is no perceived threat to the public.
If convicted on all three charges as filed, Elijah Bieniemy could face a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 33 years in prison. He remains in custody at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Eric Bieniemy was in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday, overseeing the second practice of the Chiefs’ training camp. He departed by Monday to return to Virginia to support his wife. There is currently no timeframe for his return to training camp.
In Bieniemy’s absence, Joe Bleymaier, the team’s passing game coordinator, will assume the role of offensive coordinator. Bleymaier called the team’s offensive plays during Monday’s practice and is in his 11th season as an offensive assistant with the Chiefs.

Elijah Bieniemy is the younger of two sons born to Eric Bieniemy and the former Mia Maxie. His older brother is Eric Bieniemy III. Elijah was 12 years old when his father’s University of Colorado biography, which mentions his sons, was published.
Eric Bieniemy has had a notable coaching career, including running the Chiefs offense from 2018 through 2022. He then coordinated the Washington Commanders in 2023, called plays at UCLA in 2024, and coached running backs for the Chicago Bears in 2025, before returning to Kansas City this year. The home on Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, where the incident occurred, was purchased by Eric Bieniemy in July 2023, coinciding with his tenure with the Washington Commanders. The residence is located approximately three miles from the Commanders’ practice facility. Elijah Bieniemy lists an Ashburn address and has no prior criminal records in Virginia.
An arraignment that was scheduled for Monday morning was continued, making the August 31 preliminary hearing the next significant date on the calendar for Elijah Bieniemy.
