Oksana Masters Achieves Historic Milestone
Oksana Masters has made headlines by winning her 20th Paralympic medal at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan Cortina, Italy. This remarkable achievement was highlighted by her gold medal victory in the women’s sprint sitting discipline in Para biathlon.
This latest win marks Masters’ sixth gold medal in the Winter Paralympics, further solidifying her status as the most decorated American Winter Paralympian of all time. Masters has now accumulated a total of 15 medals in the Winter Games and five medals in the Summer Games since she began competing in the Paralympics in 2012.
In a thrilling race, Masters secured her victory with a margin of 16 seconds, showcasing her exceptional skill and determination. Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed her surprise, stating, “Oh my gosh, my emotions are just pure shock. I did not expect this. All I was hoping was just to have a good time in the shooting range.”
Masters’ journey to this point has not been without challenges. She has faced numerous adversities, including surgery, a bone infection, and a concussion prior to the Games. Despite these hurdles, her resilience has propelled her to extraordinary success.
In addition to her recent triumph, Masters previously made history at the Beijing 2022 Paralympics, where she became the first American to win seven medals in seven events at a single Paralympics. Her accomplishments continue to inspire many within the sports community.
“It was a shocker (that it’s 20 medals) it just feels so surreal. Every single medal is just as important because it has a different journey and path to getting it and achieving it. It means something special, this one,” Masters remarked, emphasizing the significance of each medal she has earned.
Masters has always been driven by a strong purpose, stating, “For me, I have a very strong ‘why’, where every single stroke for me counts. It’s for every Paralympian, every athlete with a disability that was overlooked and was told they were never going to be enough and didn’t belong.” This sentiment resonates deeply with her supporters and fellow athletes.
As the 2026 Winter Paralympics continue, Oksana Masters’ achievements serve as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of representation in sports. Her legacy is not only defined by her medals but also by her role as a beacon of hope for many.
