Tennis players face alarming threats
Tennis players have been accustomed to receiving abuse and harassment on social media, particularly from bettors. Recently, this issue escalated when Panna Udvardy reported receiving threats to lose a match, including a kidnapping threat against her mother. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) confirmed that the threats were not due to a personal data breach. Udvardy, currently ranked 95th in the world, stated, “At midnight I’m panicking, I’m alone in the hotel. I was really scared, so I forwarded these messages to my parents.” This incident highlights the growing anxiety among players regarding their security.
In addition to Udvardy, Lucrezia Stefanini also received similar threats, including a photo of a gun. She remarked, “I immediately alerted the WTA, which provided me with more security … The entire tournament mobilized to make me feel safe.” This response underscores the seriousness of the threats and the need for increased security measures.
The FBI is now involved in investigating the threatening messages sent to players, indicating the severity of the situation. The WTA has acknowledged that Udvardy is not the first player to receive such messages, suggesting a troubling trend within the sport.
The Arizona Tennis Classic, scheduled from March 10-15, 2026, is set to offer a total prize money of $300,000, with the singles winner receiving $48,000 and 175 points. However, the safety of the players participating in this tournament has come into question.
Panna Udvardy expressed her concerns about the normalization of such threats, stating, “This should not be normalized.” Her comments reflect a growing sentiment among players that the sport must address these issues more seriously.
