Paris-Nice 2026 Begins with Exciting Stages

The Paris-Nice 2026 cycling race, known as the “Race to the Sun,” kicked off on March 8, 2026, with Luke Lamperti winning stage 1 in a thrilling bunch sprint. The race will span eight stages, concluding on March 15, promising a week of competitive cycling through the picturesque landscapes of France.

Stage 1 covered a distance of 171 km from Achères to Carrieres-sous-Poissy, setting the tone for the event. Lamperti expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s super special. My first win with the team,” highlighting the significance of this victory in his career. He further added, “I know I’ve been going well, to get a win and the momentum is big for my career, and also heading to the classics.”

Among the favorites for overall victory is Jonas Vingegaard, who is expected to face stiff competition from rising star Juan Ayuso, who is making his debut in Paris-Nice. Ayuso’s team has high hopes for him, with one observer noting, “Having made an exceptional start to the season, and with parcours he should flourish on, we’re backing Juan Ayuso to get the better of Jonas Vingegaard and co.”

Stage 2 will take riders on a 187 km journey from Épône to Montargis, followed by a 24 km team time trial on Stage 3. This team time trial will utilize the “ASO method” for allocating general classification (GC) times, a format that will also be employed at the grand départ of the Tour de France, making it a crucial test for team dynamics and pacing strategies.

As the race progresses, Stage 7 will feature a challenging summit finish at Auron, with a gradient of 7.3%, adding to the excitement and difficulty of the competition. The total distance of the race is significant, with riders covering a total of 138.7 km in the final stages.

Historically, Paris-Nice has been known to be affected by inclement weather, particularly in its early stages, before arriving at the sunnier regions of Southern France. This year, the weather conditions will play a crucial role in determining how the race unfolds.

As the event continues, observers are keen to see how the dynamics among the top riders will evolve, particularly with newcomers like Oscar Onley making their World Tour debut. Details remain unconfirmed regarding how these fresh talents will impact the overall standings.
