UNC and Team Norway Prepare for FIFA World Cup 2026

“UNCG is proud to support an international team of this caliber as it prepares to compete on the world stage,” said UNCG Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. This statement underscores the significance of Greensboro’s recent designation as the Team Base Camp city for the Norwegian National Football Team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

As part of this arrangement, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) will serve as the team’s training facility. The Greensboro Sports Foundation, in collaboration with the City of Greensboro, UNCG, and the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, led the local organizing committee to secure this opportunity. The selection of Greensboro highlights the strength of its partnerships and the outstanding facilities available at UNCG.

Greensboro has a legacy as a destination for professional sports in the Southeast, and hosting Team Norway is expected to contribute an estimated $4.2 million to the local economy. This economic boost reflects the city’s commitment to international athletics, as noted by Greensboro Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter, who stated, “This selection reflects the strength of our partnerships, UNCG’s outstanding facilities, and our city’s commitment to international athletics.”

In addition to its role in hosting Team Norway, UNCG has a history of serving as a training facility for international teams. Notably, it provided training support for Brazil’s SE Palmeiras during the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in 2025. This track record enhances Greensboro’s reputation as a global “tournament town” and showcases the community’s world-class facilities and hospitality on the international stage, as highlighted by Richard Beard, President of the Greensboro Sports Foundation.

While Greensboro prepares for the arrival of Team Norway, the University of North Carolina’s basketball team, the Tar Heels, is also gearing up for the 2026 ACC Tournament. The Tar Heels received a double bye into the quarterfinal round as the No. 4 seed, entering the postseason with a record of 24-7. They are seeking their first tournament title since 2016, having won 18 ACC Tournament championships overall with a 110-53 record in the event.

The 2026 ACC Tournament is set to begin on March 10, 2026, at Spectrum Center in Charlotte. The Tar Heels are projected to be a No. 5 or No. 6 seed in March Madness, adding to the excitement surrounding the upcoming sporting events in North Carolina.

As Greensboro embraces the dual significance of hosting Team Norway and the ACC Tournament, the community looks forward to showcasing its facilities and hospitality to both international athletes and college basketball fans alike. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments, but the anticipation continues to build for these major events.
