Upcoming Elections for SGA
The Student Government Association (SGA) at CU Denver is gearing up for elections for the fall 2026 term, which will take place this spring. SGA is composed of approximately 20 elected student members who represent the interests of CU Denver students across five committees. Members serve one academic year and are compensated for their roles.
In recent years, SGA has taken significant steps to address student needs, including supporting the Mental Health and Wellbeing Fee that was approved in a student vote in 2025. This initiative reflects the association’s commitment to enhancing student welfare and fostering a supportive campus environment.
Student Government Day at the State Capitol
On March 6, 2026, nine leaders from Arkansas Tech University (ATU) participated in the Student Government Day at the State Capitol in Little Rock, Arkansas. This event provided an opportunity for student leaders to engage with state officials, including Secretary of State Cole Jester and Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Nicholas Bronni.
The ATU delegation was accompanied by faculty members Jaime Land and Kevin Solomon, who guided them through the day’s activities. The experience was described as invaluable by participants, highlighting the importance of understanding state government operations.
Reflections from Student Leaders
Jared Bynum, an SGA member, shared his thoughts on the experience, stating, “I showed up thinking I was going to find a community, but really I have gotten an opportunity to challenge myself to be a better leader.” This sentiment was echoed by Carla Gutierrez, who expressed satisfaction in contributing positively to the campus community.
Carson Smith, another student leader, remarked on the impact of hearing stories from state officials, noting, “Getting to hear their stories and the path they took to get where they are now helped me see how I could implement those things into my education and my professional career so I can get where they are.” Fernando Flores also emphasized the educational value of the day, stating, “Our time there was about learning about the opportunities that Arkansas government holds.”
As SGA prepares for its upcoming elections and continues to support initiatives that benefit the student body, the engagement of student leaders in state government activities underscores the importance of civic involvement and leadership development among students.
