Darron Lee charged with first-degree murder
Darron Lee, a former NFL linebacker, has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence following the death of Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo in Hamilton County, Tennessee, on March 10, 2026. Lee, 31, allegedly stabbed Perpétuo to death last month, and prosecutors have stated that he consulted ChatGPT for advice on how to handle the situation before calling the police.
Authorities reported that Lee waited approximately 12 hours after the incident to contact law enforcement. Upon their arrival, officers discovered blood throughout the residence and found Perpétuo with multiple types of trauma, including stab wounds and bruises. District Attorney Coty Wamp described the scene, stating, “Mr. Lee was in a home with a female (who) was, for lack of a better term, beaten to death.”
Lee’s connection to the NFL is notable; he was selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, where he played three seasons before joining the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. His career in professional football spanned five seasons, during which he became a well-known figure in the sport.
In a disturbing twist, it has been reported that Lee expressed confusion and distress in a message to ChatGPT, asking for guidance on how to respond to an unresponsive Perpétuo. He stated, “Don’t know what to do right now, fiancée did her crazy thing again and now she’s messed up, I wake up and she has two swollen eyes (I didn’t do anything, self inflicted) she stabbed herself, slit her eye? Idk but she isn’t waking up or responding, what do I do?”
Following his arrest, Lee was held without bond as a judge ordered his case to be bound over to a grand jury. He is currently eligible for the death penalty, although it remains unclear whether prosecutors will pursue this course of action.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Perpétuo’s death continues, with blood evidence and the nature of her injuries raising significant questions about the events leading up to her death. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the evidence that will be presented in court.
As the case progresses, reactions from the public and former teammates have begun to surface, reflecting a mix of shock and disbelief at the allegations against Lee. The legal proceedings are expected to draw considerable attention given Lee’s previous prominence in the NFL.
