Candice Bergen Reflects on Turning 80
“I’m just in total denial. I don’t even want to talk about it. Being 80 is just unfathomable to me,” shared Candice Bergen as she approaches her milestone birthday on May 9, 2024.
Bergen, who has been a prominent figure in television and film for decades, is known for her remarkable talent and versatility. With nearly 70 film and television credits to her name, she has garnered significant acclaim, including five Emmy Awards.
Born to ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, who passed away at 75, Candice has navigated both personal and professional challenges throughout her life. She has been married twice, first to French director Louis Malle, who died in 1995, and later to Marshall Rose, who succumbed to Parkinson’s disease in 2025.
Her daughter, Chloe Malle, now 40, has followed in her mother’s footsteps, serving as the head of editorial content at Vogue. Bergen expressed pride in Chloe’s parenting, stating, “I think she’s wonderful with her kids, and she’s very lucky because she chose a great husband, Graham Albert, who is a fantastic father.” The family dynamic is further enriched by Bergen’s two grandchildren, who affectionately call her “Toto.”
Currently, Bergen is making waves in the entertainment industry with her guest role as Constance Bishop in the Apple TV series “Shrinking.” Her character is depicted as a doting mother and a sassy mother-in-law, and her performance has received praise from co-stars, including Christa Miller, who noted that the writers would often come on set to witness their comedic chemistry.
Ted McGinley, another co-star, remarked, “I consider Candice to be a TV legend. I mean, she is legendary. She has been for years a massive force in television, and she is so iconic.” Such accolades reflect her enduring impact on the industry.
Despite the challenges she has faced, Bergen maintains an active lifestyle, working out with a trainer five days a week. This commitment to fitness is a testament to her resilience and dedication to her health.
As Bergen approaches her 80th birthday, she continues to inspire many with her work and personal journey. The upcoming celebration is expected to be a reflection of her remarkable life and the legacy she has built over the years.
