Georgetown Basketball Triumphs

“Today was about our defense. It was about our physicality. We were prepared,” said Head Coach Ed Cooley following Georgetown’s 63-56 victory over DePaul in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden.

The Hoyas showcased a strong performance, with Vince Iwuchukwu and Jeremiah Williams each scoring 17 points. Iwuchukwu also contributed significantly with 14 rebounds, while teammate Mack added 16 points to the scoreboard.

Georgetown’s shooting statistics reflected a challenging game, as they managed to shoot 39.3% from the field and 21.4% from three-point range. In contrast, DePaul struggled with a 34.5% field goal percentage but found some success from beyond the arc, shooting 42.9%.

Despite the shooting difficulties, Georgetown’s defense proved pivotal, allowing them to outrebound DePaul 42-30. This victory improved Georgetown’s all-time record in the BIG EAST Tournament to 58-38.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Cooley noted, “It has been a long year for us with respect to coming down the stretch and losing games by a possession, losing at the buzzer.” This win against DePaul marks a significant turnaround for the team.

Georgetown’s historical rivalry with Villanova adds an extra layer of excitement as they prepare to face the Wildcats in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas hold a 6-2 all-time record against Villanova in this tournament, with their last victory coming in 2021.

“Our fans showed out their last game of the whole entire first day, so it just meant a lot and it’s going to give us some energy going into tomorrow,” Iwuchukwu added, emphasizing the importance of fan support.

As Georgetown looks ahead to the matchup against Villanova on March 12, 2026, the team aims to build on this momentum and continue their journey in the tournament.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential injuries or lineup changes as they prepare for the next game.
