C.J. Gardner-Johnson Signs with the Buffalo Bills
C.J. Gardner-Johnson has officially signed a one-year deal worth up to $6 million with the Buffalo Bills, adding depth to their defensive lineup.
The 28-year-old safety played for the Chicago Bears last season, where he logged 66 tackles, including 3.0 sacks, two interceptions, and four passes defended. Prior to his time in Chicago, Gardner-Johnson started the 2025 season with the Houston Texans but was released after just three games.
In his stint with the Bears, Gardner-Johnson recorded 51 tackles over 10 regular season games, showcasing his ability to contribute significantly on the field. His career has seen him play for five different teams in the past four seasons, including the New Orleans Saints and the Philadelphia Eagles, where he won a Super Bowl ring.
The Bills have not re-signed any of their outgoing free agents at the safety position, making Gardner-Johnson’s addition timely as they look to strengthen their defense. He is expected to compete for a starting job alongside rookie Cole Bishop.
As the Bills build their defense under new coordinator Jim Leonhard, Gardner-Johnson’s experience and versatility will be crucial. His ability to adapt to different schemes will be tested as he integrates into the team’s plans.
Gardner-Johnson was originally a fourth-round pick by the Saints in 2019, and since then, he has established himself as a dynamic player in the league. His journey through various teams has been marked by significant contributions, making him a valuable asset for the Bills.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific terms of his contract and how he will fit into the Bills’ defensive strategy moving forward.
