Firefighters faced challenging conditions as they attempted to control the blaze, which started on the roof of the building. Heavy winds, reaching up to 40 mph, stoked the flames, complicating firefighting efforts. Fire crews had to suspend operations temporarily due to strong storms and lightning in the area.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the incident. Fuyao Glass America stated, “At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, a fire was reported at our Moraine, Ohio facility. Employees quickly implemented our emergency response plan, all were evacuated safely and first responders were notified.” This swift action likely prevented any harm to the more than 2,000 employees working at the plant.
The fire struck a newer part of the Fuyao complex, where new manufacturing lines were being set up. In 2025, the company added 600,000 square feet of production space to enhance its operations. Fire crews utilized thousands of gallons of water to combat the flames, and electric service was cut to the plant to assist in their efforts.
Residents in the vicinity reported a strong chemical smell and visible smoke from the fire, with local residents like Tim Turpin noting, “There’s a haze in the air, and a really strong chemical smell.” His neighbor, Sue Turpin, added, “And we can smell it in our house,” highlighting the impact of the fire on the surrounding community.
Doug Hatcher, a local resident, praised the firefighters, stating, “Fire crews did a good job under tough conditions.” Their efforts were crucial in preventing the fire from spreading further.
Details remain unconfirmed as the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Moraine location has been a pivotal site for Fuyao since it opened in 2016, following the purchase of the former General Motors assembly plant. The company had previously invested $126 million to enhance its operations at this facility.
