national cheesesteak day — US news

“What I love about this is that it’s so specific to the Philadelphia community,” said Michael Empric, reflecting on the significance of National Cheesesteak Day, celebrated annually on March 24.

This year, Philadelphia International Airport made headlines by setting a Guinness World Record for the “Longest Line of Cheesesteaks,” measuring an impressive 1,200 feet. The event utilized almost a thousand pounds of ribeye steak and 225 pounds of cheese, showcasing the city’s dedication to this beloved sandwich.

Empric continued, “To do this in the airport and to donate so many of the cheesesteaks to TSA is really incredible.” The airport serves as a crucial entry point for visitors, making it a fitting venue for such a celebration.

Local eateries joined in the festivities with enticing promotions. Pat’s King of Steaks offered free fries with any cheesesteak between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., while Geno’s Steaks provided a deal where customers purchasing four cheesesteaks received the fifth one for free.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop featured a buy-one-get-one 50% off deal, and Hot Table offered $5 small cheesesteak paninis, available in-store only. Philly’s Best took $2 off their Cooper Classic cheesesteak from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Texadelphia served buy-one-get-one-free cheesesteaks.

Additionally, G’s Cheesesteaks delighted customers by handing out free sandwiches from 1 to 3 p.m. Pat’s King of Steaks also partnered with Djour.Philly to create a special “guest” cheesesteak, with proceeds benefiting Philabundance, a local food bank.

National Cheesesteak Day originated in 1994 when four Philadelphia high school friends celebrated their love for cheesesteaks, and it has since evolved into a city-wide event that brings together locals and visitors alike.

As the day unfolds, the excitement surrounding National Cheesesteak Day continues to grow, with many looking forward to the delicious offerings and community spirit it fosters.

With the combination of unique promotions and community involvement, National Cheesesteak Day remains a cherished tradition in Philadelphia, drawing attention to the city’s culinary heritage.
