“With the heaviest hearts, we share that our dear Alex passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by love and dear friends. He was comfortable and thankfully out of pain,” announced Hilarie Steele on March 28, 2026.

Alex Duong, who gained recognition for his role as Sonny Le on the popular television series Blue Bloods, died at the age of 42 after a long battle with cancer. His diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma came after he experienced troubling symptoms, including a severe headache and a noticeable bulge in his left eye.

Duong’s health deteriorated rapidly; he spent two and a half weeks in the hospital following his diagnosis. Tragically, he went into septic shock shortly before his passing. The tumor, described as “extremely aggressive,” had already caused him to lose vision in his left eye.

Despite the challenges he faced, Duong remained a devoted father and husband. Steele shared that he was alert enough to say goodbye to his five-year-old daughter, Everest, whom he cherished deeply.

In February 2025, a GoFundMe page was established to support Duong and his family during his treatment. The community rallied around him, reflecting the impact he had made in both his personal and professional life.

Duong’s role on Blue Bloods spanned from 2021 to 2024, during which he endeared himself to fans and colleagues alike. His talent was recognized by many in the industry, as one colleague noted, “I always thought he was an interesting performer and comic, and I had always wanted to work with him.”

His passing is a significant loss not only to his family but also to the entertainment community, where he was seen as a trailblazer for Asian actors. One industry veteran remarked, “Having been in this industry for over three decades, I know that Asian men have historically been among the least respected and least empowered… even today.”

As friends and family mourn his loss, the legacy of Alex Duong will undoubtedly live on through his work and the love he shared with those around him.
