What observers say

“You take a moment out of the world to remember the core joy of receiving a gift as a child,” reflects Matthew Gillikin, co-founder of Isekai Arcade in Boise, Idaho. This sentiment encapsulates the essence of the arcade, which opened its doors in October 2025, aiming to create a community space that resonates with both locals and fans of Japanese culture.

Inspired by the gashapon machines commonly found in Japan, Isekai Arcade offers a unique blend of entertainment and nostalgia. “Japan has been doing gashapon for decades — long, long before America decided to jump on it with the blind boxes,” adds Susie Gillikin, Matthew’s partner and co-founder. The arcade not only features these machines but also hosts events celebrating Japanese holidays, fostering a sense of community and cultural exchange.

The Gillikins’ journey to establishing Isekai Arcade began in 2024 when they visited Japan and were captivated by the vibrant culture surrounding gashapon. This experience led them to start their parent company, Chibi POP Toys, which laid the groundwork for the arcade’s creation. Their vision was clear: to bring a piece of Japan to Boise while also engaging the local community.

Demi Erwin, another key figure at Isekai Arcade, emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, stating, “We try to do things that incorporate not just the Japanese community, but also the local community.” This approach has resonated with many, as the arcade has quickly become a hub for fans of anime and Japanese culture, particularly those who enjoy the isekai genre.

The isekai genre, which involves characters being transported to another world, has gained immense popularity in recent years. Notable titles such as “Ascendance of a Bookworm” and “That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime” have captivated audiences worldwide. The fourth season of “Ascendance of a Bookworm” is set to air in the Spring of 2026, and it has recently faced allegations of AI usage in its opening theme, sparking discussions within the anime community.

As the isekai genre continues to evolve, so does the landscape of anime production. WIT Studio, known for its work on “Attack on Titan,” is behind the production of “Ascendance of a Bookworm,” showcasing the high-quality storytelling and animation that fans have come to expect. Other isekai titles, including “Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-” and “The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior,” also contribute to the genre’s rich tapestry.

With the rise of isekai culture, Isekai Arcade stands as a testament to the growing interest in these narratives. The arcade not only provides a space for entertainment but also serves as a community gathering point where fans can connect over their shared love for anime and gaming. As Matthew Gillikin puts it, “We wanted to create a magical space for people,” and that vision is becoming a reality in Boise.

As the arcade continues to thrive, it will be interesting to see how it adapts to the evolving trends in the anime industry and the isekai genre. The Gillikins and their team are committed to fostering a welcoming environment that celebrates both local and Japanese cultures, ensuring that Isekai Arcade remains a beloved destination for years to come.
