The Portland Trail Blazers have named Micah Nori as their new head coach. Nori, who previously served as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves, committed to a one-year contract with team options for the subsequent two seasons. This decision marks a significant step for Nori, who has pursued a head-coaching role for several years.
The terms of Nori’s contract have drawn attention, with his former boss, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, expressing that the focus on the deal’s structure overshadowed Nori’s achievement. Finch stated that the contract terms were a personal and business decision between Nori, the team, and his agent, and he did not inquire about them directly. Finch emphasized the rarity of head-coaching positions in the NBA, noting there are only 30 such jobs and they are challenging to secure.
Nori’s Path to Head Coach
Nori’s journey to a head-coaching role has been extensive, including interviews for seven head-coaching positions over the years. He was a finalist for roles in Cleveland, New York, and Chicago in recent hiring cycles. Finch, who first worked with Nori in 2015 with the Denver Nuggets, highlighted Nori’s strengths, including his offensive creativity and his understanding of how to win games through detailed management.
Finch appointed Nori as his lead assistant in Minnesota, recognizing their similar approaches to the game from their time together in Denver. He believes Nori’s biggest adjustments in Portland will involve establishing authority and assembling an effective staff. Finch noted that transitioning from assistant to head coach shifts the focus from basketball specifics to leadership, an area where he believes Nori possesses natural abilities.
Joe Cronin, the Blazers general manager, issued a statement expressing confidence in Nori. Cronin stated that Nori embodies the qualities the franchise seeks in a leader, citing his contributions to successful organizations, his expertise, his ability to develop players, and his authenticity. Cronin added that the team is enthusiastic about the future under Nori’s leadership.

New Ownership and Team Outlook
Nori’s hiring is the first major appointment under the Blazers‘ new ownership group, led by Tom Dundon. This group acquired the NBA franchise from the estate of Paul Allen, with the sale receiving approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors in April. Nori, in a team statement, acknowledged the strong commitment from Dundon and Cronin to cultivate a culture that prioritizes accountability, player development, and team success.
Nori has a long history as an NBA assistant coach, dating back to the 2009-10 season. His past roles include stints with the Detroit Pistons from 2018-21, the Denver Nuggets from 2015-18, the Sacramento Kings from 2013-15, and the Toronto Raptors from 2009-13, before joining Minnesota. He also held other roles in Toronto, such as director of NBA scouting and an advance scout.
Nori takes over from interim coach Tiago Splitter, who has since become the coach of the Chicago Bulls. Under Splitter, Portland achieved a 42-40 record and made a playoff appearance, losing in five games to San Antonio in the first round. This marked the first time the Trail Blazers finished with a winning record since the 2020-21 season. The team’s roster includes players such as Deni Avdija, Donovan Clingan, Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Toumani Camara, and Caleb Love.
