Following LeBron James‘ departure from the Los Angeles Lakers, betting markets have identified the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers as the leading contenders to sign the superstar. James’ agent announced that he would not be returning to the Lakers, opening his free agency to the entire league.
At several sportsbooks and prediction markets, the Warriors are currently favored to acquire James. Kalshi lists Golden State at 46 percent, while Cleveland is the second favorite at 28 percent. The Miami Heat are third with 12 percent. Traditional sportsbooks also show Golden State as a strong favorite, with DraftKings listing them at -275 in legal jurisdictions and BetMGM at -250 odds in Canada.
Oddsmakers have adapted their approaches to NBA Free Agency over time. Nick Bogdanovich, a Las Vegas oddsmaker and head of trading for Boomer’s, noted that the playing field is now more level, with everyone having access to the same information. This contrasts with past instances, such as in 2010 when sharp bettors placed wagers on the Miami Heat at 50-to-1 odds before James’ decision, causing a significant shift in the odds overnight.
Impact on Championship Odds
Oddsmakers have already adjusted next year’s championship odds for the Warriors (25-1) and Cavaliers (30-1). If James joins either team, their championship odds would only slightly decrease. Conversely, if he does not choose them, their odds are expected to increase.
Johnny Avello, sportsbook director at DraftKings, explained that while James would make the Warriors a better team, he does not believe they could win a championship, citing other teams ahead of them. Avello also mentioned that James’ desire for personal statistics can sometimes present a challenge.

While the San Antonio Spurs are considered a team that makes basketball sense, there are no current reports suggesting an imminent move. Avello stated that if James were to join the Spurs, they would become the favorite. San Antonio currently has +260 title odds at DraftKings, slightly behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are the championship favorite with +250 odds.
NFL Teams Joke About Landing Spots
Following James’ exit from the Lakers, several NFL teams playfully invited the NBA icon to join their ranks. The Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans all made lighthearted remarks about being his next destination.
During his high school years at St. Vincent–St. Mary’s, James played wide receiver for the football team and reportedly received offers from Division I schools. He concluded his high school football career with 103 receptions, 2,065 yards, and 23 touchdowns, despite not playing his senior year.
Both the Packers and Jaguars did not have a 1,000-yard receiver during the 2025 season. Green Bay did not use any of its 2026 draft picks on a pass-catcher, while Jacksonville added two tight ends and two receivers among its ten draft picks.
Despite being set to turn 42 in December, it has been suggested that James would not be too old to compete on the football field, with the NFL posting highlights of 42-year-old legendary receiver Jerry Rice from his final season in 2004. However, it is considered more probable that James will remain in the NBA, with Indianapolis Colts star cornerback Sauce Gardner predicting he would join the Indiana Pacers.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul indicated that James informed the Lakers they could proceed without him as he intends to play elsewhere. The four-time NBA champion is expected to play in his 24th season.
