Charlotte as a Potential NFL Host City
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently indicated that Charlotte is a strong candidate to host future NFL Draft events. During a fireside chat hosted by Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, Goodell suggested that the city’s evolving downtown area is well-suited for such a large-scale event. The discussion took place during an event celebrating the renewed naming rights for Bank of America Stadium and its ongoing renovation.
Goodell noted that the modern NFL Draft has grown significantly, attracting close to a million attendees, including international visitors. He described it as a global event that would be a “terrific thing” for Charlotte, particularly with the new developments in the city. The commissioner’s comments highlight the league’s strategy of holding the draft in various locations across the country, transforming it into a major fan experience.
The draft has evolved considerably from its earlier indoor formats, which were typically held in venues like a New York City hotel or Radio City Music Hall. The shift to outdoor events began with the 2017 draft in Philadelphia, which saw 205,000 attendees. This number was surpassed by the recent event in Pittsburgh, which reportedly drew 805,000 people, setting a new attendance record.
While the NFL Draft is scheduled for the next two years, with Washington D.C. hosting in 2027 and Minneapolis in 2028, Charlotte could realistically target the 2029 draft as its first opportunity to host the event.
Long-Term Super Bowl Ambitions
Beyond the draft, the prospect of Charlotte hosting a Super Bowl was also discussed. Goodell acknowledged that while the draft is a significant event, it does not compare in scale to the Super Bowl, which is considered the league’s signature road event. Tepper expressed a desire to bring a Super Bowl to Charlotte, though Goodell suggested it might be a possibility further down the line.
Goodell praised Bank of America Stadium, calling it “Super Bowl quality.” However, he pointed out that a key factor for hosting a Super Bowl is the availability of hotel rooms and other facilities. A leaked NFL Super Bowl bid specification sheet from the early 2010s indicated a requirement for hotel rooms equal to at least 35% of the stadium’s seating capacity within a 60-minute drive, which translated to approximately 25,000 rooms for a typical NFL stadium.
As the game’s popularity has grown, the estimated number of required hotel rooms has increased to between 60,000 and 75,000. The greater Charlotte area currently offers around 50,000 hotel rooms, though many are located in outlying areas. Goodell observed that Charlotte’s growth, particularly in its hotel infrastructure, is continuous, suggesting that a Super Bowl could be a future possibility as the city develops further.
Tepper remains optimistic about Charlotte’s potential to host major NFL events. He highlighted the city’s central location on the East Coast and its transportation infrastructure, including what he referred to as the sixth busiest airport in the country. Tepper also humorously mentioned the availability of luxury homes near the stadium, referencing how properties in places like Augusta are offered for use during large events, potentially compensating for any perceived shortage of luxury hotels. He even joked about securing the house of Panthers President of Football Operations and General Manager Dan Morgan for such an occasion.
Panthers’ On-Field Progress and Stadium Renovation
During the same event, David Tepper also shared his positive outlook on the Carolina Panthers’ progress on the field. He expressed confidence in the team, stating that after winning the NFC South title, the Panthers are now a “playoff team.” This marks a shift from his previous assessment, where he believed the team could reach the playoffs but wasn’t a guaranteed contender.
Tepper acknowledged the contributions of key personnel, including General Manager Dan Morgan, Executive Vice President of Football Operations Brandt Tilis, and Head Coach Dave Canales, who were present with players like quarterback Bryce Young and defensive tackle Derrick Brown. He expressed excitement about the team’s acquisitions in the draft and free agency, believing they have assembled the necessary pieces for success.
The event also served as an unveiling for MOMINTUM, a renovation showcase center that previews the advancements planned for the renovated Bank of America Stadium. This center features immersive LED, interactive software, real-time content, and intelligent control, aiming to create one of the most technologically advanced experience centers in sports and entertainment. Tepper Sports & Entertainment publicly announced an extension of the naming rights partnership with Bank of America and released new stadium renderings, providing a clearer vision of the venue’s future.
The next available Super Bowl is in 2031, offering a potential long-term goal for Charlotte.
