Emir Balat Arrested During Protest Incident

“Violence at a protest is never acceptable,” stated Zohran Mamdani, responding to the recent arrests of Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi in New York City.

On March 7, 2025, Balat, 18, was accused of throwing an ignited improvised explosive device during a protest against an anti-Islam demonstration organized by Jake Lang. Kayumi, 19, was accused of supplying one of the projectiles used in the incident.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) Bomb Squad conducted a preliminary analysis of the device, confirming it was not a hoax and could have caused serious injury or death. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the protest, which saw a significant clash between far-right demonstrators and approximately 125 counterprotesters.

Balat, a U.S. citizen whose parents were naturalized in 2017, and Kayumi, whose parents became citizens in 2004 and 2009, were arrested amidst escalating tensions during the protest. Six individuals were arrested in total in connection with the incident.

“There is no place for violence of any kind in our State and those responsible for this cowardly act will be held accountable,” remarked Governor Kathy Hochul, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Jessica Tisch, a spokesperson for the NYPD, elaborated on the nature of the device, stating, “The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb.”

The incident has raised safety concerns regarding political demonstrations and the potential for violence, prompting the FBI to assist in the ongoing investigation.

As the investigation unfolds, details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the events leading to the arrests of Balat and Kayumi. Their homes in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, were reportedly raided by FBI agents as part of the inquiry.

Khayer Kayumi, Ibrahim’s father, expressed concern over his son’s involvement, stating, “If he’s going to be five minutes late, he calls.” This highlights the unexpected nature of the allegations against the young men.

As authorities continue to assess the implications of this incident, further developments are anticipated in the coming days.
