Severe Weather Alerts for Springfield

Severe weather is on the horizon for Springfield, IL, as the National Weather Service has issued a Level 3 risk of severe storms for the area. This warning comes as meteorologists predict the possibility of tornadoes rated EF-3, with the most severe weather expected to impact the region shortly.

According to the latest forecasts, Springfield could see between 1 to 1.5 inches of rain by Wednesday, with some areas potentially receiving double that amount. The Storm Prediction Center is also preparing to elevate parts of Northern and Central Illinois to a Level 4 risk, indicating a heightened threat of severe weather.

Meteorologist Rebekka Copple stated, “We’re going to get more coverage, and we’re going to start transitioning into more of a wind threat as it becomes more linear.” This indicates that the nature of the storms may shift, leading to increased risks for damaging winds in addition to tornadoes.

Copple further noted, “The strongest storms…looks like it’s going to be primarily along and north of I-72, but we’re going to see potentially severe storms across our entire forecast area.” This broad warning underscores the potential for widespread severe weather affecting many residents.

Data Outages Expected

In conjunction with the severe weather forecasts, the Weather Channel has announced that required system maintenance on Monday, March 9, will likely result in data outages or interruptions. The primary window for these outages is expected to last about one hour from 9:30am to 10:30am MDT.

As the storm system approaches, rain is anticipated to continue through the morning hours on Wednesday, further complicating conditions in the area.

Looking Ahead

While the forecasts indicate significant weather events, details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timing and impact of the severe storms and tornadoes. Additionally, it remains unclear if the cap preventing storms will be broken, which could influence the severity of the weather.
