lake effect snow warning — US news

A lake effect snow warning has been issued for Erie County, effective from 8 p.m. on March 16 until 8 a.m. on March 18. Residents can expect significant snowfall, with accumulations ranging from 5 to 9 inches in various locations.

Winds from the west are forecasted to gust between 35 to 45 mph, contributing to hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has also indicated that a major winter storm is set to impact the upper Midwest and the upper Great Lakes.

In Chicago, a Blizzard Warning that was previously in effect for Boone, DeKalb, and McHenry counties has been cancelled, while a Winter Weather Advisory remains active for several counties, including Cook, DuPage, and Kane, until 1 p.m. on March 17.

Snowfall totals in the Chicago area have already reached notable amounts, with reports of 6 inches in Harvard, 5.7 inches in Spring Grove, and 4 inches in DeKalb. These weather conditions have led to significant disruptions at O’Hare International Airport, where 406 flights were canceled, alongside 31 flights at Midway.

Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse emphasized the importance of safety during this storm, stating, “Our crews will be working throughout this storm to keep our roads clear and safe so our customers can safely complete their travels.” She urged drivers to reduce their speed and remain vigilant for changing conditions.

The severe weather has also had unfortunate consequences, including reports of a partial house collapse on the South Side of Chicago, attributed to the storm’s impact.

As the storm progresses, the National Weather Service continues to monitor the situation closely, and further updates are expected as conditions evolve. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact on local infrastructure and travel.
