Potential Blockbuster Deals
As the MLB trade deadline approaches on August 3, several significant trades are being discussed that could impact the playoff race. These potential deals involve key players moving to teams aiming for a championship run, with some transactions described as blockbusters that could reshape the October playoff picture.
One potential move involves Kevin Gausman, currently with Toronto, who could be traded to the Cubs. Chicago is reportedly seeking an additional starting pitcher for the postseason, and Gausman is not on their reported eight-team no-trade list. Acquiring Gausman would provide the Cubs with an experienced pitcher capable of pitching deep into games, potentially easing the burden on their bullpen.
Another trade idea suggests Reid Detmers moving to the Phillies. Philadelphia is looking to address its fifth-starter issue, and Detmers offers control through 2028, along with the ability to miss bats and further development potential. The Angels are reportedly open to listening to offers for Detmers.
A bold prediction for deadline day involves Mason Miller potentially joining the Yankees. Another idea involves the Red Sox obtaining catcher Hunter Goodman from the Rockies. The Red Sox are seeking a middle-of-the-order bat, and Goodman is controllable through 2029. In exchange, the Rockies would receive left-handed pitcher Connelly Early, right-handed pitcher Kyson Witherspoon, shortstop Marcelo Mayer, and catcher Carlos Narváez. Early, 24, has a 3.44 ERA in 17 starts this year, while Witherspoon, 21, is a 2025 first-round pick with high upside. Mayer, 23, was a 2021 first-round pick.
The Padres could potentially acquire right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta from the Mets, with the Mets receiving left-handed pitching prospect Kash Mayfield. Peralta has had a challenging season with a 4.66 ERA and a 1.438 WHIP, and he is a free agent at the end of the season. Mayfield was the Padres’ 2024 first-round pick and recently participated in the Futures Game.
